Digitilizing Artistic Skills: Can We Use AI To Mechanize Traditional Art?
Share
As the creators of the new technology, humanity has taken up a parental role for the AI tools that are rapidly emerging and being refined as the months tick by. AI is learning from us everything we can provide, from writing books and research papers to generating artwork based on the knowledge it has amassed and assigned values to. We are already seeing it used in synthesizing accurate human voices and mimicking specific art styles.
Already, we have managed to use AI in fields such as medicine for its pattern recognition as well as in the archeology field to dissect valuable scrolls without ever having to open them or even crack old speeches and codes. Some AI tools have been taught to remove the decolorizing effect of water on underwater images. Similarly, AI has found its uses in helping restore old artwork and tracing faint lines and markings that would otherwise be missed.
With all of the amazing feats the AI can achieve now, we've thought of an intriguing question that no doubt can be found in certain insomnia-torn minds: can AI be used to replicate traditional art forms? We are not talking about the middle-of-the-line generations but a model that would be highly specialized and trained on only one type of style developed and nurtured by an individual with distinct skills and style. Going beyond mimicking form, can the "human touch" be imbued?
To understand what we are rattling about like we've had one too many coffees and a Red Bull for good measure, we envision specialized AI models trained by the very person who it is trying to emulate. Everything from how the shadows are cast to the composition, minor stylistic choices, contexts in which they deliver the scene, and even angles and eyes. While still limited in expression, an AI like that would be able to become an extension of the person.
Beginning The Mad Idea
The general chart of the concept would follow this flow:
- The Chosen Artist: the living and breathing artist would lend their art willingly to the AI to be analyzed and taught the basic style and composition. The artist will likely have to create "transition pieces" for the AI from which it can draw a better understanding.
- Defining The Countless Strokes: brush strokes, grooves, symbolism, and even the thickness of the point are used by the artists to tell our minds a story, which will need to be implemented into the AI.
- Habits And Messages: every human has habits, flicks of a wrist, or a way to tell a story. Giving the AI the ability to express it through specialized subfunction prompts will enrich the piece.
- More Than Just Prompts: simple prompts most users are used to will not work for the goal this project yearns for. The final model will likely be the most complex AI image generator possible.
Now, of course, our surface-level idealist ideal will be a lot more complex in practice than just typing it out while severely dehydrated. The beginner steps will likely involve artists using the already existing AI generators to create models that mimic the style of their art the same as any other. We've been using drawing and painting as a basis, but it can be applied to anything from sculpting to writing and even singing styles.
Applying The Mad Idea
Even if our techno-babble crazy talk doesn't go anywhere far, the lowest part of the imagination can already be applied in practice without much trouble. Any artist could monetize an AI model of their art, which would not infringe on any copyright soft spots, as a cheaper alternative instead of having direct access to the person. This would allow them to "work" on multiple projects simultaneously while reserving their full skills for the highest bidder.
Acting or playing instruments is a realm the AI will struggle to tackle as it's a much harder hill to climb. But we already have a good case of AI software voices like Vocaloids and Utau gaining great popularity to the point of hosting actual concerts. The voices of the singers can be "lent" to those who require them and the would-be songwriters would "rent" the singer for the project they need. It would preserve old voices, but hopefully, the new singers will continue to arrive.
Remember when we mention brush stroke thickness and grooves? That's because we had a crazier idea while chugging vitamins. By combining the mechanical part of the AI - the hardware - with the software functions, there is a potential to have the AI act in the physical realm to affect the medium directly. Even more complex than generating an AI image, it would require coding precision to chisel at stone or drag a brush like how the model artist would.
Smut?
We hear you, we hear! NSFW AI is also part of this mad plan. Already, you can spot AI Porn Generators using real-life contracted models to create a persona or a digital clone of the adult content model. It's an effective way to gain clear photography of your favorite actresses and actors. In the realms of the drawn smut, it would be like having your favorite smut creator draw a new piece based on your commission at any time.
The direct benefits of artists, either NSFW or SFW, lending themselves fully to the digitalization of their talents would open an accessible and less labor-intensive way to monetize themselves. This can go a step further as these new AI models can be used and applied to AI Sex Dolls to develop tangible skills like singing and drawing. If we go even further, bodily habits (like stances or subconscious actions) can also be passed on either by actors or genuine personalities.
The Vision
AI tools are complex systems that also happen to be energy-intensive. Instead of settling on "good enough," we encourage the field to be pushed further and explored to the edges, yet unforeseen or unimagined. Instead of amalgamations of art and personas, the development of software specialized on only one person can prove more valuable than a generalized model ever could. The AI dream continues to blood, and we cannot wait to see it happen!
